Specialty Story

         It’s all about the MUSIC…

Why should we care about the Specialty Shows?  Then why should we care about new music?  We pay homage to the Specialty Shows with The Specialty CD because they are the Music Tastemakers and true unsung heroes of Radio, who provide the only place left to hear new music on the commercial airwaves.

When Sha-La decided to release at Specialty Radio, we did so with 1 goal in mind:

To prove that the music of was at the cutting-edge of Rock and ready for Radio. The only way to prove this would be for the Music Tastemakers at Radio – The Specialty Shows, to discover them...

And it would be at Specialty Radio that won recognition for their music. Specialty Shows (more precisely, Alternative Specialty Shows) across the nation would play every track on their 3 EPs & 1 CD, making them one of the very few artists to ever achieve that honor.

would be named to the Specialty Top 10 Albums 2001, along with such notables as Radiohead, and Jimmy Eat World (very cool company!).

But after all, had been on the Specialty Charts (more precisely, the Alternative Specialty Charts) for the last 10 weeks of 2001, and overall, had been on the charts for 20 weeks during the year!  So the FMQB honor was well earned and greatly appreciated, knocking us on our collective asses!

And it represents what Specialty is all about – namely, it's the one place on your radio dial where the playing field is even among the competition - where the Indie & Major worlds collide...and it is a HIGHLY competitive playing field...which is why any success there is a real achievement for any and all of the players.

4 years later, there have been significant changes to the radio landscape. R&R, VA & FMQB used to have the major Specialty charts...now only FMQB remains. There's only a handful of the same hosts still doing their shows, but there's also "new blood" stepping in and carrying on the job of exposing new music over the airwaves.

So in the spring of 2005 we re-introduced to the Specialty panel with The Specialty CD. We knew going in that there would be no guarantee for the band being remembered and it would be like starting all over again. Plus, the competition from new buzz bands and some long awaited releases from format favorites, would increase the difficulty in getting airplay. But at the same time, we felt the music would never have a better chance of being heard than right now. And luckily, we were given airplay and support from some of our old buds like Tim Boland, Bill Hanson, Bryant Stowe and Larry Mac , while being discovered by new ones like Jared Cranke, Mr. Polychronopolis, Chris Randour, Jessica Wood, Mase and Miss Double G, to name a few.

Thanks to these and other dedicated Specialty Hosts, The Specialty CD would get a chance to be heard...charting for 6 weeks and making the Top 10 on the Specialty Album Chart, becoming one of our most successful projects to date!

We owe a debt of gratitude to the Specialty Shows, as does every artist who ever had their music first played on them.

SPECIALTY BECOMES MORE IMPORTANT

"The word "important" has never been more appropriate in describing specialty radio. Alternative radio is a successful mainstream format and has been for a number of years. The real Alternative is you men and women programming your own shows, be it on Sunday evenings or other time slots. Whether your show is a half-hour long, one, two or more, you have the power to expose new music to your loyal listeners.

In many cases, you play the music you do because you actually spent the time to listen to the full CD when you received it. Sometimes, you'll play the single for weeks in a row because that's all you have. Once you've received the album, you then are empowered to keep the artist on the FU chart for weeks. Our chart is a true gauge of what might end up in full rotation in the future on your station. Of course, many of these records won't, but that's part of the fun of specialty programming. Labels really do pay attention to this chart, because it's something tangible to bring into their marketing meetings. It also helps in aiding their retail department. Say a small major label artist is showing sales performance in your market; you are instantly a hero. Even if it doesn't show up in the regular format of your station, it is still an accomplishment.

Just keep in mind, the reason you are important is because you are the only game in town. Take it from someone who hosted and programmed a specialty show for 14 years. Forget all my PD and MD reigns at the stations I worked for, the few hours I spent every week on-air not playing format were the most incredible moments spent in my (your) career. You and your music--period. It doesn't get any better than that."

SPECIALTY...where the Music matters...

Some of the un-sung heroes in Radio today, are the people who program and present the Specialty Shows...they're the ones who introduce us to the new music that's being made by Indies & Majors alike, as well as, discovering un-signed talent that deserves a chance to be heard...

We at Sha-La would like to take a moment to thank the people at the Specialty Shows  who have played our artists and helped us gain recognition at Radio...where the competition is stiff and the spots for slots continually diminish...
